Gameboy Color non oem reprodction Tomb Raider video game cartridge. Game cartridge comes with a plastic protective case.

Released in 2000, Tomb Raider (often subtitled The Nightmare Stone) is an action-adventure game for the Game Boy Color that adapts the traditionally 3D series into a detailed 2D side-scrolling format. Developed by Core Design and published by THQ, it was widely praised for its technical achievement on 8-bit hardware.

Gameplay and Mechanics

The game plays similarly to cinematic platformers like the original Prince of Persia or Flashback.

  • Move Set: Despite the GBC's limited buttons, Lara can perform approximately 25 moves, including running, ledge-grabbing, backflips, swimming, and cliff-diving.
  • Structure: Players guide Lara through 14 levels spread across five distinct environments, such as temples, caverns, and volcanic areas.
  • Puzzles and Combat: Gameplay focuses on flipping switches, finding keys, and navigating trap-filled ruins. Lara defends herself with her signature dual pistols, which feature an auto-aim mechanic that points at nearby enemies like bats, scorpions, and skeletons.
  • Saving: The cartridge uses a battery-backed save system, allowing players to save their progress at specific spinning silver "Save Game Crystals".

Technical Features

Reviewers from sites like Gamespot and IGN highlighted the game's high production value for a handheld title:

  • Fluid Animation: The game features over 2,000 frames of animation for Lara, making her movements appear remarkably smooth.
  • Character Detail: Lara's character sprite is 48 pixels tall, significantly larger and more detailed than typical GBC sprites, which usually ranged from 16 to 32 pixels.
  • Cutscenes: The story is advanced through more than 50 high-color, digitized cutscenes.

Plot

Lara is recruited by Professor Igor Bowmane to retrieve the Nightmare Stone, an ancient relic capable of releasing an evil god named Quaxet. She must race against a rival group of treasure hunters through the Amazonian jungles and ancient ruins to secure the stone before the god is unleashed.
