Wario Land II for the Game Boy Color is an action-adventure platformer released in early 1999 that serves as a color-enhanced version of the original 1998 Game Boy title. Developed by Nintendo R&D1, it is the first game in the series where Wario is effectively immortal; he cannot die or receive a traditional "Game Over," shifting the gameplay focus toward puzzle-solving and exploration.

Key Features & Gameplay

  • Immortality Mechanic: Instead of losing lives or taking damage, Wario reacts to enemy attacks by transforming into different states. While often hindering movement, these transformations are essential for solving puzzles and reaching new areas.
  • Transformations: Key reactions include Fat Wario (crushing blocks), Zombie Wario (falling through floors), Puffy Wario (floating upward), and Hot Wario (breaking specific fire blocks).
  • Branching Storylines: The game features over 50 levels with numerous hidden exits that lead to entirely different chapters and five distinct endings.
  • Treasure Hunting: Every level contains a hidden treasure and a piece of a master treasure map, both of which are required for 100% completion and to unlock a secret "Really Final Chapter".
  • Mini-Games: Players can spend collected coins on various mini-games, including a number-guessing game to unlock map pieces and a monster-matching game to earn treasures.

Version Differences (GBC vs. GB)

  • Color Palette: The GBC version features fully colored sprites and backgrounds, unlike the monochrome original.
  • Save Incompatibility: A unique trait of the "black cartridge" (GBC) version is that save files are incompatible between the Game Boy Color and the original Game Boy; if a save is started on one system, it must be deleted to be used on the other.
  • Graphical Tweaks: Some minor changes were made, such as replacing a nameless underwater enemy with a sawfish in the color version.
